nz sauvignon blanc ★★★★ REDWOOD PASS MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010 $12-$16 This wine tripped off a discussion about the sometimes fine difference between elegant and boring. It's juicy and lean, offers plenty of bright fruit and is driven by lengthy lines of acidity. The panel went for elegant. ★★★★ SAINT CLAIR PIONEER BLOCK 18 SNAP BLOCK SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010 (MARLBOROUGH) $22.95-$24.95 Winemaker Matt Thomson's sure touch produces another single-vineyard stand-out. A citrusy, floral, aromatic lift precedes a light, bracing mouthful, quite dry and flinty in style. There's plenty to appreciate in this wine, and no better way to do it than in the company of a seafood chowder. ★★★★ THE CROSSINGS AWATERE VALLEY MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010 $19 This is a wine that speaks of its place of origin. Restrained floral aromatics, a strong minerality and urgent acidic lines all point to the Awatere Valley, where the nights are very cool. An attractive juiciness persists through to a lengthy finish. ★★★★ VILLA MARIA RESERVE WAIRAU VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010 (MARLBOROUGH) $27 Anna Flowerday enjoyed this wine's fresh, green, sweaty aromas, describing them as "Sonny Bill Williams perspiration rather than old man's armpits". Fresh, crunchy nectarine flavours come through. Pair it with a classic salade Niçoise. THREE NOT OF A KIND As the years go by, the differences in style of the Sauvignon Blancs sourced from Marlborough's three big valleys -- the Wairau, Awatere and Waihopai -- have become more marked. These valley variations are very apparent in the 2010 vintage. Wines from the cooler, windier Awatere show leafier flavours underpinned by an edgy minerality, while the more benign Wairau climate offers up a rounder mouthful where tropical fruit and stonefruit notes can predominate. The experienced "Marlborough man" behind our top Sauvignon Blanc, Brent Marris, feels that the Waihopai style lies somewhere in between: "We get more cold air coming through than in the Wairau. But while our wines are not as leafy as those from the Awatere, we do get that flinty minerality, not unlike Sancerre." ★★★★ WHALEBONE BAY SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010 (MARLBOROUGH) $11 This is a big expression with concentrated fruit flavours (grapefruit, some herbal notes) and real drive across the palate. A good wine to take to a Malaysian BYO to drink with a medium-spicy beef rendang.
